Winter Weather ends a Wonderful Week

We had a really busy week. Thank you parents for coming out to Math Night on Thursday and for reading the blog to check up on our students' success!

This week we started a new read-aloud book, The Wild Robot, one of my favourites. Roz - Unit #7134 - finds herself on an island and a new life. Rozzum the robot feels responsible for the accidental destruction of several bird eggs and ends up taking care of the last remaining egg which has just hatched. Brightbill has just been named! What will happen next? Can a robot learn to care for a baby bird?

This week in Language Arts we continued with Daily Five, worked on writing -- focusing on reader responses. I modeled reader responses and students began writing their own. New Words Their Way have been distributed. Please practise these word sorts at home. We met in small groups for guided reading.

We continued exploring the concept of place value in math and had group discussions on problem solving skills. One of the strategies we used was CUBES, an acronym for an effective process. Please ask your child what each of the letters in CUBES stands for. Students also learned a new place value game called "In a Pickle" which they are really enjoying. We will continue place value next week.

In Social, we continued our work on mapping and understanding the globe. Terms and vocabulary: continent, ocean, equator, pole, hemisphere, countries, cardinal directions, compass rose.

In Health, we explored wellness, including healthy eating habits and exercise, in recognition of World Diabetes Day on Wednesday. Today we discussed relationship choices, friendship, and the differences between being peace-makers and peace-breakers.

Neat week: there are no classes on Fri. Nov 23 so next Thursday will be "Club Friday."

Have a great weekend - and Go Stamps Go!!
