Our Learning Journey Continues...

Hello and thank you for checking in with us! I hope you had a wonderful break with family and friends :) I can't speak for everyone, but I'm sure glad to be back into our routines.

Our first couple of days were filled with excitement as we reunited with our friends, but it was also a challenging as our energy levels waned by early afternoon. But by Thursday, we were all back at it.

Here's a look at our days:

In Language Arts, we started reading the sequel to The Wild Robot and began reading The Wild Robot Escapes. Roz has been repaired and is now a dairy farmer though she dreams of escaping and going back to Brightbill and her friends on the island. In writing, we reviewed the writing process which begins with idea generation, then planning and organizing our thoughts, writing the draft, re-reading and editing our work, and then submitting our stories. The first assignment asked us to think about possibilities or hopes for 2020 and the second was creating a story from a picture prompt. We also met with our new guided reading groups and selected our books.

In Math, we reviewed, and continued our work with addition requiring regrouping. We're moving away from the use of concrete materials such as base ten blocks, but still using the language to understand when we we have to regroup. We also started transferring our knowledge of regrouping to examine subtraction requiring regrouping and I think we're off to a good start!

In Science, we learned about animal hearing and some of the adaptations certain animals have made for their ears and ability to hear. Ask your child about the African Elephant or fox. But we also reviewed, and sent home, our Sound Project Forms. Students were informed in December that they would be making instruments (out of recycled materials only) and these instruments must do two things: adjust in pitch, and adjust volume. Included on these forms are planning pages to help your child plan and create their instrument. These sheets should be coming back to the school along with their projects by Wednesday Jan. 15th.

NOTE: If your child CANNOT BUILD their instruments at home, I will set aside some time for them to build them here - however, they will need to bring their materials to school.

In Social, we will begin looking at rights and responsibilities and needs vs. wants next week as we begin exploring quality of life.

For next week:

Dress for the Scary Weather! (Looks like a Blue Week...)

Sound Projects due by Wednesday the 15th

Have a great weekend!
