Let the Building Begin!

Hello and thank you for checking in with us. We've had another fun yet busy week, and are now looking forward to next week.

This week in Language Arts, we have been busy with writing assignments as we wrote all about our long weekends and then wrote a reader's response to Wonder, our read aloud novel. More specifically, we looked at the word "empathy" and tried to find examples in Wonder, but also to other texts we've read and/or even to our real life situations. We've also spent some time reflecting on our reading from how we select "good fit" books to understanding which strategies we use, or should be using, to decode unknown words.

In Math, we began looking at time as we learn how to read analog clocks. Students were either eager to show what they know about time, or were a little confused by the numbers This will continue next week prior to understanding standard and non-standard units in our measurement unit.

In Social/Science, it's all about planning our building projects. Building off of last week's presentation of testing materials, students will be building their prototypes of bridges or boats next week. These must be built at the school, and with recycled materials only. We will provide tape, glue, string, and popsicle sticks (very limited quantity - 6 each?) but all other materials must come from home. These projects must be stable and able to support 500 grams (approx. 1 lb.). Students must also include safety features within their designs. All plans / blueprints have been approved by the engineering officers, Mrs. Peterson and myself. We're hoping students will build, test, and correct until the finish product is complete, and due, on Friday.

Finally, our Clay for Kids was amazing! We're excited to see the finished product.

Next week:

Our final day of In-Line skating is Wednesday the 29th - please bring your own helmets.

Please remember to bring in your building materials

The Save the ocean Club is holding a bottle drive the week of June 10th - a trailer will be parked in the parking lot. All donations will be going to the Ocean Legacy Foundation from Delta B.C. as they work towards solutions for all of the plastic pollutants in our waters. They've even discovered a way to convert discarded plastic particles and water bottles into reusable fuel.

Finally, in conjunction with our student leadership team, the Save the Ocean club is also trying to gather old dried out markers to stop them from being discarded as they can neither be thrown away or recycled. Crayola will pay for the shipping and dispose/recycle them properly so please test and collect your markers as we prepare to send them in.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!
