Halloween to Remembrance Day

Hello everyone :) I'm hoping you're all enjoying a restful and beautiful day. For some, November 1st is the celebration of All Saints Day, All Hallows' Day, or even the Feast of Saints. But regardless of what it's named, I hope you had a wonderful Halloween.

So here's a snapshot of what we've been working on...

Language Arts - we officially started our Words Their Way Program this week and all students should have their words, and a variety of games, to practice at home. We will be testing the students this Friday on the spelling patterns. They will be given 10 words, 8 "familiar" words from their lists, and two new words that follow the patterns. We've been enjoying our Daily Five Choices of reading, writing, or word work, and have started reading Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth. This story, though dated, is a wonderful adventure that explores the use of words and language in a playful way.

Math - we are wrapping up our exploration of patterns this week. We must still look at symbol substitution (pre-algebraic thinking) and sorting objects based on attributes. Our focus will then shift towards Place Value where we stretch our number sense from 2 digit numbers (up to 100 in grade 2) to larger 3 and 4 digit numbers (up to 1000 for grade 4).

Science - we are wrapping up our Rock & Minerals unit this week.

Social - we will be looking at geography beginning later this week. This includes studies on the cardinal directions, continents and oceans, hemispheres, and mapping as we explore the globe.

For next week:

Fun Lunch Wednesday the 6th (Chopped Leaf)

Remembrance Day Assembly Friday the 8th - No Classes next Monday the 11th

Sound Kreations Dance Residency to begin Wed. the 6th

All for now - have a great weekend :)
