Birthstones, Minerals, or Gems?

Hello and thanks for checking in again! Thanks also for taking the time to come by and introduce yourselves. It's always a pleasure getting to meet parents and family members :)

So this week, we've continued looking into our birthstones and are quite amazed by some of the legends or beliefs thought to be associated with them. For example, the ancient Greeks believed that a Topaz stone could increase you strength, and wearing one would make you invisible! But the Romans though it could improve your eyesight! What do you believe?

Language Arts:

We continue building our reading stamina and now have to beat 12 and a half minutes - our goal is 20 minutes and I'm pretty sure we'll make it! Students were a little concerned that 20 minutes was too long, but they seem to have realized that when you're focused on a task, the time goes by quickly. My "melted clock" (by Salvador Dali) reminds us that time seems to go by slowly, or quickly, depending on our attention and focus. We currently have 3 choices for Daily Five: Read to Self, Word Work (bananagrams, word searches, word families...), or Work on Writing. In Holes, Stanley and Zero have made it to "God's Thumb" and are surviving on drinking dirty water and eating onions. What a great book!

Math:

We have continued collecting and representing data by making bar graphs. Next week we'll begin our work on reading and understanding the information graphs and charts can provide us.

Science:

It's all about our Birthstones and understanding the Rock Cycle. Next week we will begin our investigation into the three types of rocks. Ask your child if they remember the names of the three different types (we've only just begun though...).

PE:

It's all about the Terry Fox Run so we've been building our running stamina and practicing how to pace ourselves. Our run will be held next Friday!

Upcoming:

Fun Lunch Wednesday Sept. 25th - please order online through Healthy Hunger

Toonies for Terry - once again we will be collecting toonies (or any donation amount) for cancer research. The large glass bottle will be in the office. Donations can also be made online.

Our annual Terry Fox Run will be held on Friday Sept. 27th.

Orange Shirt Day is on Monday Sept. 30th. Next week, we will begin building our students’ understanding of belonging, memories, courage, community, uniqueness of individuals, and the rights of the child, because, every child matters. For more information on Orange Shirt Day, please see Phyllis' story at: http://www.orangeshirtday.org

Have a great weekend!
