And We're Off!

Hello and thank you for checking in with us! We've had another full week and I'm sure many of our students are just as tired as I am.  And yes, we're also experiencing our first bout of seasonal colds. So please wash your hands regularly.

Well it may have taken a couple of weeks but I think we're getting used to our new Day 1, Day 2, and Friday schedules.  More on this will be shared next week during meet the teacher night (although we all know it's meet the creature night).  Anyway, our new schedule is becoming easier to follow.

TWAS (this week at school)

Language Arts - we have been discussing the importance of selecting "good fit books" so we can sustain our reading stamina. We want to be challenged without becoming frustrated and we must always ensure we understand what we're reading so we must pause and ask ourselves, "does this make sense?"  We have also been working on writing. Students have written about their summer holidays and have even tried to write their first reader response about our novel Holes (what a great book!).  Again, I will share more about our writing program when we meet next week.  We've also worked on solving crosswords for Word Work.

Math - we worked on math centres, focused on basic math facts, during most of the week to ensure we have a numbers page in our visual journals. Today, we began Data Collection and Management using tally marks to collect before creating graphs to represent our findings.

Science - We're loving the Rocks & Minerals.  We've learned about water erosion and how larger rocks can be reduced to grains of sand or soil.  We've also learned that this means we eat minerals! I think they were impressed by this.  But we have much more to observe and discuss.  We will be sharing our rock collections but not quite yet - we need to discuss what they should be looking for and deciding how to classify them prior to passing them around.

Music - Mr. Cooper has been teaching them about various artists associated with the St. Louis Blues.  Wish I was taught that as a student!

PE - we have been working on various fundamental movement skills like hopping, running, and skipping.

NWAS (next week at school)

Discover Archaeology will be held in the Learning Commons on Tuesday September 18th - there will be an am and pm group

Meet the Teacher (6:30 - 7:30) followed by an outdoor movie presented by Parent Council.

* Please note - There will be a formal presentation in the form of an introduction along with a powerpoint slide show outlining some key information commencing at 6:30 and then a repeat presentation at 7:00 - please take a look at some of your child's work and please be sure to take a moment and meet the creature :)

See you soon!
